The hero of the animated series "Kaelou" is a very special frog who lives in a surreal fantasy world that exists inside a giant fishbowl. It's the best of all possible worlds: the sun always shines, the grass is perpetually green and the trees never stop bearing luscious fruit.
But it turns out that this is all an illusion, one that is maintained by Kaelou through his special powers. Kaelou is an eternal optimist who always looks on the bright side. Like the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, he believes that people are inherently good, and so he has created an environment that matches his ideal of perfection.
Every morning Kaelou ascends a ladder, each of whose rungs corresponds to a different type of weather: "sunny," "rainy, "snowy," and so on. The day's weather depends on which rung Kaelou stops.
Kaelou is well aware of his uniquely privileged position in this quaint little world, and does his best to use his powers responsibly and for the good of all.
Now, of course, there has to be a fly in the proverbial ointment. In this case, it's The Cat, who is disgusted with what he sees as Kaelou's falsely optimistic world-view. The Cat, like the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, believes that people are inherently bad. He does everything he can to spoil and wreck Kaelou's paradise, which the Cat sees as a threat to his dark and negative take on life.
In the "Kaelou" series, these two opposing visions of the world come into conflict, often with humorous results. |
