What gives the series an added post-modern twist is that Kaelou, the Cat and all the other characters are fully aware that they're characters in an animation series. That doesn't stop Kaelou from trying to make the best of his situation by trying to encourage those around him to be kind and gentle.

The Cat, on the other hand, is determined to wreck what he sees as a world based on a lie. He always tries to provoke Kaelou and make him angry, which is not a pretty sight: Kaelou changes from a friendly frog into an angry toad, who can be mean, unjust and tyrannical - all in the name of making people happy!
But once the storm passes, Kaelou is again his normal good-natured self.

Pretty heavy stuff. But the deep philosophical and moral undertones of the series are offset by Kaelou's infectiously fun and energetic personality.

The creators of "Kaelou" have emphasized the contrast between the characters and their artificial environment by depicting that environment in a way that deliberately lacks depth and substance. The characters, however, are full of life and depth - they're animated, in the truest sense of the word!
